Twitter’s Recent Leadership: The CEOs

The chief executive officer position of the platform historically known as Twitter—which has been officially rebranded as X—is fundamentally controlled by its owner, Elon Musk.

Musk bought the social media giant for $44 billion in October 2022, immediately ousting the previous CEO, Parag Agrawal. While Musk initially served as the official CEO himself, he later transitioned to the titles of Executive Chairman and Chief Technology Officer to focus heavily on the site’s product design and engineering architecture.

To manage day-to-day business operations and restore advertiser relations, Musk hired former NBCUniversal advertising chief Linda Yaccarino as CEO in mid-2023.

Yaccarino spent roughly two years navigating the platform’s highly turbulent transition, which included major feature overhauls, shifting content moderation strategies, and the integration of xAI’s Grok chatbot.

However, following intense public friction and internal pressure regarding platform safety and AI content, Yaccarino officially resigned from her position in July 2025

Since Yaccarino’s departure, the ultimate leadership and operational command of the platform have remained consolidated under Elon Musk’s direct oversight. Operating with what colleagues describe as an insatiable sense of urgency, Musk remains the primary decision-maker steering the company’s continuous transformation into an “everything app”.
